Technology at various scales - supercomputers, corporate networks, desktop and laptop computers, the internet, tablets, mobile phones, and processors that are hidden in everyday devices and are so small you can barely see them with the naked eye - all pervade our world in a major way. Computers and Society: Modern Perspectives is a wide-ranging and comprehensive textbook that critically assesses the global technical achievements in digital technologies and how are they are applied in media; education and learning; medicine and health; free speech, democracy, and government; and war and peace.

Ronald M. Baecker reviews critical ethical issues raised by computers, such as digital inclusion, security, safety, privacy, automation, and work, and discusses social, political, and ethical controversies and choices now faced by society. Its mission: to explore novel technological solutions to the world's persistent social problems.

Together with his team, he invented electronic devices for under-resourced urban schools and developed digital platforms for remote agrarian communities. But after a decade of designing technologies for humanitarian causes, Toyama concluded that no technology, however dazzling, could cause social change on its own. Technologists and policy-makers love to boast about modern innovation, and in their excitement, they exuberantly tout technology's boon to society.

But what have our gadgets actually accomplished? So, a golden age of innovation in the world's most advanced country did nothing for our most prominent social ill. Toyama's warning resounds: Don't believe the hype! Some features of the site may not work correctly. What Toyama experienced in India, though, shook his faith in technology.

This paradigm is thus person-centric, nearly even personalistic. Definitively, Toyama sets the stage for a framework of action which empowers persons to affect change. And this growth is not merely individual; indeed, it is personal and communal. Given that a one thousand word review is not sufficient to address the highpoints and pitfalls of Geek Heresy — truly, an article length treatment would be more apropos — I will limit my critical reflection to two intertwined issues.

My criticism is twofold, being concerned with matters relevant within the philosophy of technology. In the first place, Toyama tends to conflate electronics with technology. The problem with this analysis is that of a confusion between genus and species: while electronics are forms of technology, not all technologies are electronic.

Within some circles, language in- itself is considered to be a technology cf. Walter Ong, Marshall McLuhan.

Contrawise, his Law of Amplification is grounded upon a presupposition that the material in this case, technology is not inert; indeed, amplification, though it may be passive, is the application of some inherent power upon those forces which are amplified.

What is needed today, the new paradigm for which Toyama argues, is that of a shift in worldview which will cultivate the hearts, minds, and wills of all persons, such that they will strive for the good and the beautiful. With this in mind, Geek Heresy is both a success as well as a delightful read. Robert M.
